About Us

The mission for the Castro Valley Arts Foundation is to provide our students and community with artistic experiences that educate, enrich and entertain by securing resources for the Castro Valley Center for the Arts.

The Castro Valley Arts Foundation (CVAF) has a unique partnership with the Castro Valley Unified School District (CVUSD). The Foundation is committed to augment the Center for the Arts infrastructure; ensuring requisite staffing, program development, equipment replacement and facility enhancements.

The high quality educational, enriching and entertaining events that Castro Valley Arts Foundation produces at the Center for the Arts make a difference in our community.

Education: Providing arts education to students is a keystone to our mission. The Castro Valley Arts Foundation strives to bring programs to all grade levels.

  • High School: Actors, directors and the technical team for Golden State Theatre Productions share their expertise with students in workshops and on-the-job training. Artists exhibiting in the Exhibition Room offer workshops to the Visual Arts classes.
  • Middle School: CVAF sponsors musical theater technique workshops for choral classes during the school year and a musical theater summer camp, staging a fully produced musical each summer.
  • Elementary: CVAF organizes special workshop/assemblies demonstrating cultural arts such as Mexican dance with Ballet Folklorico and Celtic music/dance with Golden Bough. The after school musical theater workshop, combines elementary and middle school age children resulting in a show each semester.

Enrichment: The budget crisis at the state and local levels has increased the need for the added artistic opportunities which the Foundation provides to our students and community.

  • Engaging local artists to display their work in the Exhibition Room with receptions that facilitate direct access to the artists.
  • Collaborating with community groups and local businesses to obtain substantial gifts for the Center such as pianos, drum sets and acoustic shells.
  • Gifting scholarships to graduating seniors who have contributed their time and talent to the Center.
  • Producing the "Light the Lights" concerts which offer students the opportunity to perform and see a live professional performance. Headliners have included OEBS Maestro Michael Morgan and Broadway star Alice Lynn.

Entertainment: The Castro Valley Arts Foundation has developed the Castro Valley Center for the Arts into a remarkable community resource, bringing big city entertainment to Castro Valley.

  • Local audiences have enjoyed live concerts with international opera star Frederica Von Stade, Grammy Award winning San Francisco Girls Chorus, Beach Blanket Babylon phenom Val Diamond and many others.
  • CVAF created Golden State Theatre Productions to produce semi-professional shows such as RENT, Carousel, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Oklahoma. Though the cast includes actors from all over the west coast, Castro Valley actors and sometimes community leaders share the stage.
  • Each season CVAF presents a Series of varied performances including music, dance, lecture and theater.
