My art is multimedia, and my favorite part of art-making is collage. I have used a discarded book on the game GO found on the street in Tokyo, old notebooks and journals from Paris, Amsterdam and Spain, gorgeous scraps of silk from the gowns of Falleras in Valencia, a vintage (and water damaged) “Bobbsey Twins" book found at a garage sale in Florida, newspapers from Marrakesh, a math book from Athens, Greece and of course paper I have come across in my hometown of Oakland, California.

I began working with paper due to its simplicity and recyclability. Over time, I grew to appreciate paper's symbolic meaning. Made from once-living plants, paper represents an afterlife that morphs to meet human needs. It serves as the soul beneath the lifeworks of artists, unseen yet carrying their marks of life. For papercut artists, it is a veil cut open to another reality, revealing the artist's vision through the holes they create.

Freddie Allen

March, 2026

Freddie Allen moved to Castro Valley from the Peninsula and calls her new community "a hidden gem."  Freddie had a printing business in Palo Alto and before that was a textile scarf designer.  When asked how she became a potter, she credits a friend who gave her a kiln.  "I've always enjoyed playing with mud, and drawing with color is satisfying to my inner core so ceramics was a perfect fit!"
